An Introduction to FEMM

I have wanted to do a post on FEMM for such a long time. I'm obsessed with their music, fashion, and image! As a FEMM Agent, I would like to introduce you to FEMM, and help them gain more international success! Who are they? What is their music? Where do they come from? What is their image?

Introduction/Profile

FEMM is an abbreviation for Far East Mention Mannequins, and they have built this huge, interesting, and very brilliant image, background, and history to their band. I will get to this history, and the whole deal with mannequins a little later. :)

What is FEMM's music?

First of all, their music genre can be described as J-Pop (Japanese pop), electronic dance music (EDM), electropop, techno, and dance-pop. However, they also include elements of hip-hop, electronica, eurodance, trap, and house music frequently incorporated in their pop music. Despite coming from Japan, all of FEMM's tracks are completely sung in English. Many of their songs seem to have an underlying theme of female power and independence, which can be seen in their international hit, "Fxxk Boyz Get Money" where the video went viral and caused a sensation. According to member RiRi, "We leave it to the listeners to decide about the message or feel of this track, but as for FEMM, they’re singing about “girl power”. Itʼs okay to be sexy, just donʼt let them take advantage of you." Many of their tracks are also produced by prominent producers behind other hugely popular stars such as Beyonce, Deadmau5, and Lady GaGa. They are choreographed by the Japanese choreographing team Hidali, and their latex fashions are made by Shoichiro Matsuoka of GM Atelier.

Where do FEMM come from?

FEMM is a Japanese music duo signed under Avex Music Creative Inc. with a sub-label, Maximum10. For their European distributions, they are signed under the London based label JPU Records. The duo work out of Tokyo, Japan.

What is FEMM?

Since FEMM stands for Far East Mention Mannequins, the duo is portrayed and act like stiff mannequins. All their movements are calculated and robotic-like, and they emotionless, unmoving looks. They maintain these mannequin characters during public performances and events, even to the point where sometimes staff members will physically pick up and carry the two girls on and off stage. This image comes from the background created for the duo FEMM. RiRi and LuLa are mannequins from FEMM's Agency Syndicate, which is a fictional agency that dispatches agents to recruit certain mannequins (like actual mannequins) all over the world, saving them from human oppression. Once recruited, the agency incorporates a device into the mannequins that allows them to come alive and act on their own, becoming a FEMM. They are then redistributed back into society. The overall all goal of FEMM's Agency Syndicate is to of course acquire world domination that translates to the duo FEMM acquiring world domination in popularity and success. :) Kaiho and Todo have two "characters" they portray, the agents (humans) and the FEMMs (mannequins). Kaiho becomes RiRi the FEMM and the agent Honey-B, while Todo becomes the FEMM LuLa and the agent W-Trouble. Kaiho says that RiRi is a "combat" mannequin that wears "rather aggressive designs". "RiRi uses her combat skills to fight the anti-mannequins. She is really aggressive and takes on any challenge. She feels most comfortable in her military gear." Todo describes LuLa as a "babyfaced... housekeeper" that wears more "reserved" and "softer" designs of clothing. Kaiho also says, "LuLa’s responsibility is to heal wounded mannequins, including RiRi. They depend on one another." The tagline for the duo is "Do Dolls Have Feelings? Do Their Songs Move People?", and this shows their goal to free all mannequins from human oppression. The fans of FEMM are known as agents, but through FEMM's official site, fans are given two avatars- a FEMM (mannequin) and an agent (human). By using the sharing functions on the site, fans can earn virtual currency, known as Mentions to attain new items and costumes for their FEMM, improve their agent and regular rank, and finally become part of the "Secret Nine" top rank. It's such an intricate, inventive, and fantastic background to the duo that draws in audiences!

FEMM music videos

FEMM's music videos are always very bold, strange, interesting, and captivating. They usually include many effects, lights, and lyrics on the screen as well as robotic-like, fascinating choreography. Take a look at their videos! :)

They also supported the movement "Dance is Not a Crime", which was a movement created by FEMM against the Japanese government's legislation where night clubs had a curfew, and were shut down at midnight. Dancing was then prohibited after the night clubs closed. People could not dance within 66 meters from clubs after a certain cut off time. FEMM continuously protested this legislation during 2015 including two short videos uploaded to their Youtube, "Dance is Not a Crime" and "FEMM Twerk". The legislation has since been lifted (in 2016)!

Now to the most important part of this post and its focus- FEMM fashion!! ^0^
